Update on the Mental Health (Treatment and Care) Amendment Bill

Steve Druitt, Project Leader, Mental Health Legislation Review, ACT Health updated carers on the proposed provisions of the Mental Health Amendment Bill tabled in the Legislative Assembly and to be debated later this year.

Alcohol and Other Drugs Forum (May 2014)

In May 2014, Carers ACT was pleased to collaborate with the ACT Mental Health Consumer Network in co-hosting a forum that showcased the service philosophies and treatment approaches of six Alcohol & Other Drug services in the ACT.

Carer Burnout (April 2014)

The Carer Burnout forum was organised directly in response to positive feedback from people who listened to a radio interview conducted by Carers ACT in December 2013. During the radio show, Doris Kordes interviewed Robin, a Carers ACT counsellor and Kristin Holzapfel, author of the book Selfless: A social worker's story of losing and finding herself (forthcoming) on the topic of carer burnout and how to manage it.

Understanding Carers Rights Forum (October 2013)

The Understanding Carers Rights forum was organised directly in response to recommendations made by carers who attended a Mental Health Carers Forum held in June 2013. The aims and objectives of the forum were to:
- equip carers with knowledge and tools for understanding their rights in a complex mental health system
- provide participants with practical tools and strategies that will be empowering as well as assist them in their role of caring for someone with mental health issues.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and friends (August 2013)

On 7 August 2013, Carers ACT hosted a forum specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and friends in a caring role of someone living with mental health issues. The aim of this forum was to engage participant discussion on barriers and enablers relating to accessing mental health services and supports in the ACT.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Carers (June 2013)

On 25 June 2013, Carers ACT held a networking and consulting forum for mental health carers and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD). The purpose of the forum was to:
- provide an opportunity for CALD carers to talk about issues relating to accessing mental health services and supports; and
- meet mental health carer representatives who, through their participation on committees, are working towards systemic change for carers.
