Meet Your Carer Representatives forum - Tuesday 25 February

The first Networking & Consulting Forum for 2014 will provide mental health carers with an opportunity to meet with their representatives. Carer representatives will be available to chat with you in an informal setting, and to provide you with information on the range of topics covered by their participation on local and national committees. Representatives are keen to hear from you, and to listen to any concerns you may be experiencing in the mental health system.

Extreme Heat Warning

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Paul Kelly and ACT Ambulance Service Acting Chief Officer Mr Howard Wren today warned Canberrans that prolonged extreme heat conditions are again forecast for the ACT this week from Wednesday 29 January lasting until at least Monday 3 February 2014.

"It is important that the ACT community does not become complacent to the risks associated with prolonged periods of hot weather. We all remain susceptible to heat-related stress and illness, which can range from mild to very serious. However, the elderly, young children and babies are most at risk during extreme heat events, Dr Kelly said. "People with illness and chronic medical conditions and pregnant women may also need extra monitoring and care during hot weather.

headspace — Australia’s innovation in youth mental health: who are the clients and why are they presenting?

headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation is the Australian Government’s major investment in the area of youth mental health. The National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (NSMHW)revealed that one in four young people experience a clinically relevant mental health problem within any 12-month period, compared with one in five in the general population.

ACT seniors alert - Extreme heat forcast for the ACT this week

The ACT Chief Health Officer, Dr Paul Kelly, and ACT Ambulance Service Chief Officer, Mr David Foot, have alerted Canberrans to the Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast for prolonged heat conditions occurring in the Territory from this week.

Every year many Australians suffer from heat-related stress and illness which can range from mild to very serious.

Anglicare report confirms that disability support programs must take into account the needs of carers and families

Carers Australia welcomes the report released by Anglicare yesterday on Caring for a Child with an Intellectual Disability and Challenging Behaviours. The report dramatically highlights the strain on families caring for such children. Access to suitable, affordable respite care to allow families to take a break from focussing on the care and management of the child and to spend some time focussing on themselves and each other is paramount among these needs.

Carers ACT’s submission to the 2013-14 ACT Budget

Carers ACT 2013-14 ACT Budget response focuses on four strategic priorities for carers and the people they support. These include:

  • Supported accommodation for people with disability and people with mental illness
  • Enhanced flexible respite services
  • Transition of young people with disability to adulthood
  • Training for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), aged care and mental health reform.

A guide for carers on information sharing with mental health clinicians has been developed in partnership between the School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, University of Western Australia; the Mental Health Division; the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist and Carers WA. The Guide relates to the WA Mental Health Act, but its content is relevant to all carers, consumers and mental health service providers. You can access the Guide here.
